On the occasion of World DNA Day, the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (BCBT), Khwaja Yunus Ali University, organised an intra-departmental debate competition 2026 that brought together students from different batches in a vibrant display of scientific reasoning and communication.
A total of 38 participants initially competed, from which 12 candidates were selected and divided into four teams: Nucleic Acid, Protein, Mitochondria, and Nucleus. The competition progressed through a quarter-final round in the traditional debate format, narrowing the field to two finalist teams.
The grand finale featured an engaging debate on the topic: “Genetically Modified (GM) Food: A Solution for the Future or a Threat to Health?” The proposition was supported by Team Nucleic Acid and opposed by Team Mitochondria. The debate was intense and intellectually stimulating, reflecting strong analytical and argumentative skills from both sides. Ultimately, Team Nucleic Acid emerged as the champion.
Three students marked themselves as the best speaker. Where Maruf Hasan (20th Batch) was recognised as the Best Speaker of the tournament. His contribution was remembered with deep respect, as he is no longer among us, leaving the BCBT family in mourning. Nusrat Jahan Nuri (17th Batch) also delivered a commendable performance, while Ramiz Faria, the team leader in the final round, earned the title of Best Speaker of the Final Round.
The event successfully fostered critical thinking, teamwork, and scientific dialogue among students.
