From Research to Patent: Concepts, Processes, and Opportunities

The Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Khwaja Yunus Ali University (KYAU) organized an interactive session titled “From Research to Patent: Concepts, Processes, and Opportunities” on 15 September 2026.
The session was conducted by Mr. F M Javed Mehedi Shamrat, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). He discussed the fundamental concepts of patents, the process of transforming research outcomes into patentable innovations, intellectual property rights, patent application procedures, associated costs, and opportunities for commercialization. The session emphasized the importance of identifying innovative research outcomes, ensuring novelty, protecting intellectual property, and developing research findings for practical and commercial applications. Faculty members were encouraged to consider patent protection as an important step toward translating research into innovation.
The Honorable Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Md. Asraf Ali, encouraged faculty members to publish their research while strongly emphasizing the importance of securing a patent before publication where applicable. He also stressed that patents should be developed with practical manufacturing and commercialization potential in mind.
The university congratulated Mr. F M Javed Mehedi Shamrat for being the first faculty member of KYAU to secure a patent. In recognition of his achievement, he was presented with an honorary crest and certificate.
The session contributed to strengthening research awareness, intellectual property protection, and an innovation-oriented research culture at KYAU.
